Robert J. and Ada Dienst deeded 22.21 acres and four adjoining tracts to the Catholic Parish for construction of a church and school. Dienst had purchased the property at a sheriff’s sale Sept. 1, 1933 for $7,000. The site had been the former greyhound dog race track on North Broadway. Before construction, Catholic services were held in the old downtown theatre which was last owned by Melvin Girbert, a local contractor and realtor.

Intro to Baseball

Baseball was introduced to high school students in Grove City in 1907, three years before Jackson Township High School opened. Clay Neiswander organized and coached the team assisted by Adda Harbanger, both teachers at the Park Street School. The sport was popular in the village from the early years with many games played at Beulah. The picture shows a Grove City team in 1898.

First High School Band

Some histories indicate the first high school band was organized in 1909, one year before the Jackson Township High School opened, but a picture in the files of the Southwest Franklin County Historical Society indicate this photograph of a high school band was taken in 1906. It’s documented the band practiced at the Beulah Methodist Church and at the home of Mrs. Rolla White. In 1971, the Grove City High School band performed Script Ohio during a pregame show for the Cincinnati Bengals at Riverfront Stadium.
