This brick house on White Place, built around 1848, was once the home of William Foster Breck, pictured, the founder of Grove City. Breck, George, Jerimiah Smith and William Sibray met in the front room to create the plat for Grove City in 1852 according to Historian Earl R. Nicholson.

Andrew Gantz, a Pennsylvania native, purchased land in Jackson Township and a year later settled the property with two sons, John and Adam. Pictured is Adam and Edith Gantz with buggy. Drawing by Earl Nicholson.

The historic Devoss house in Harrisburg was built by the first mayor of the village, Dr. Joseph Helmick. Harrisburgh (with an “h”) was originally settled by Elijah and Rachel Chenoweth. Jim Henry, an artist for The Pike County News-Watchman, created this sketch about the Chenoweth home when the family lived on the Pee Pee Prairie near Piketon.
