Opposition to Annexation

On May 28, 1970, Dr. Martin L. Stahl voiced opposition to the latest efforts by the Columbus City School District to annex suburban school properties. If the state board of education had approved the effort, only 40 students would be transferred from South-Western to Columbus but $1.5 million in tax revenue would be lost. Columbus wanted the $22 million of commercial and industrial land on the westside which was the life blood of the suburban district.

Lt. William Thornton was Grove City’s first police detective in 1970, according to Capt. Raymond Ruoff. Thornton was transitioned from a uniform officer to plain clothes. Thornton had also once served as a village marshal.

Little Theatre Off Broadway

A group of local residents gathered Feb. 12, 1959 and formed a Parent Teacher’s Association (PTA) dramatic club they called Little Theatre Off Broadway. The intent was to create interest and get more parents involved in PTA meetings and activities at the Richard Avenue School.

The Bell Finally Tolls

The Park Street School bell rang the last time from the belfry in June 1964. School Board member Lee McMurrin was the last person to ring the bell while it was still on school property. The bell today is housed at the entrance to the Grove City Welcome Center and Museum and is on permanent loan from the school district. The picture shows the bell inside the museum before it was moved outside.
